How do I meet up with the group?

The tour begins in the Canary Islands on the island of GRAN CANARIA in the early afternoon of June 19, 2017.  It is strongly advised that all participants arrive on Gran Canaria the day before, June 18, to avoid any possibility of missed connections with the group.  We will be happy to obtain early arrival hotel space for you.

The first meeting will be held at approximately 2pm at the hacienda in which the group will be staying.   The hacienda is located 40 minutes northwest from Gran Canaria’s airport.   We will gladly assist in arranging your airport transfer, however, the cost of the transport has not been included in the pricing to allow maximum flexibility for clients who wish to visit other parts of Gran Canaria prior to joining the group.

After the tour ends in Maderia what are my options?

You can stay over extra days and Wine-Knows can arrange extra nights at our sea front 5-star hotel, or can obtain another venue for you on another part of Madeira.  If you’re flying back to mainland Europe, we can also assist with airport transfers.

What about international airfare to and from Europe?

Group airfare has purposefully not been included to allow maximum flexibility in arrival & departure options. This means that travelers may go both early as well as stay over after the trip concludes.   Wine-Knows Travel, Inc. provides land only arrangements and does not provide airfare.

Who are the people I can expect to be my fellow travelers on this tour?

Our groups are composed of people from diverse occupations, singles & couples, men & women, a mix of young & old, well-seasoned international travelers, as well as novices.  All have a common interest in food & wine.  The overwhelming majority of participants on our tours are repeat clients.  In addition, each tour participant is a non-smoker.

What accommodations will be used?

This trip will offer two very different but equally compelling properties:

A splendidly restored hacienda, the oldest in the Carnary Islands.   Set in a sea of banana trees with views for miles in every direction, this nearly 125 acre estate is an actual working banana plantation.  The completely renovated villa oozes old-world grace and charm, but offers creature comforts of the 21st century including updated bathrooms with Jacuzzis.

The tranquil location is the perfect spot in which to relax & unwind after an international flight…

…as is the hacienda’s atmospheric spa.

One of the hacienda’s 18 beautifully coiffed bedrooms.

Every part of the hacienda offers a distinctive character.

The 2nd venue is a  luxurious modern 5-star resort with a Michelin star restaurant.   Offering magnificent panoramas of the harbor, the town of Funcha and sea, this hotel offers all of the bells & whistles of a world-class property:  sublime service, a superb spa, spacious & gorgeously outfitted bedrooms…and Madeira’s only Michelin-star restaurant.

The hotel’s cliff-side setting is nothing short of spectacular.

Bedrooms offer 5-star comfort and terraces with views.

While there is an indoor spa, a massage with this view may be the best choice. There are many spaces for privacy & relaxing on the property.

What culinary experiences will be offered?

Dining experiences have been mindfully selected. Meals will provide both depth & breadth of what both the Canaries & Madeira’s food scene.  We’ll eat in everything from simple wine bars and family-owned restaurants, to upscale special occasion venues offering the finest in dining.   One of these restaurants is the only Michelin star restaurant in Madeira.

In addition to carefully chosen restaurants, this tour will feature visits to several artisanal food producers such as makers of chocolate, cheese, pastries & cookies, as well as Europe’s only coffee plantation.   There will also be trips with local foodies to outdoor markets and grocery stores.

What about clothing?

The tour will be casual dress, however, we will be also be dining in some top restaurants so bring nicer clothes for these evenings.  Good walking shoes are essential.  Also, don’t forget to bring a swimsuit---both properties have pools, and one hotel is right on the beach.

Consider the following 3 rules of thumb to minimize the amount of clothing required:  (1) Bring layers.  (2)  Use the mix-and-match principal (i.e. if it doesn’t mix or match, leave it at home.)  (3)  Use accessories to change the look versus bringing additional clothing.

How about the weather?

Daytime temperatures in both the Canaries & Madeira during June average about 70-75  degrees so pack accordingly.  Be sure to bring a sweater as evenings along the sea can be chilly.  While rain is unusual at this time of year, it never hurts to pack a small umbrella.

What are my options as a single traveler?

The price is based upon double occupancy.  Should you wish to share a room, every attempt will be made to find you a roommate (most of the time we have been quite successful in doing so, however if we are unable to find you a roommate, you will need to pay the single supplement of $993 US.)

Back

How much free time is available?

We have provided free time as detailed in the itinerary.  Furthermore, it is not mandatory that you attend all of the planned experiences, although most of our clients do!  This is your trip---if you would rather sleep in, shop, or simply chill at the hotel’s spa, then do it!

Back

Do you accept credit cards?

Yes.  We accept payment through PayPal (PayPal.com).  Since PayPal charges us a fee, this fee must added to the cost of the trip.
